From fungus gnats to fruit flies, there are countless species of pesky, tiny flies. In general, management strategies will work for any species. Make a homemade gnat spray with gentle liquid soap and water. Mix a teaspoon or less of gentle hand or dish soap with a 1 US pint of lukewarm water.
Some gnats tend to hang out around your sink drains and tubs. These particular nuisances are known as drain flies, and they’re a bit more resilient than other gnats. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t easily get rid of them.

Mesh screens help prevent gnats from easily getting into your home and could trap them so they don’t lay eggs nearby. If you’re experiencing warping and rotting problems, it’s time to replace your windows and doors.
If you don’t want to use chemical products, you can make your own organic spray. You can make it out of lemon scented dish soap, vinegar and water. It may not be as fast acting as Raid, but it’s much safer in homes with pets and children. Whether in your home or around your garden, fungus gnats can take over your plants within a matter of days. Likewise, if left untreated, they can eventually kill them. Simply vacuuming up the gnats on the leaves and stems of your houseplants can help.
Eliminate food sources
Use a spray bottle to spritz this solution at gnats flying around your home. You can easily buy sticky paper traps or sticky fly strips at your local hardware store or online. These traps are covered with sweet, fragrant substances designed to attract gnats and flies that live in your home or yard. When gnats try to feed on the sweet surface, they get stuck. Certain colors of traps are more attractive to gnats, such as fluorescent green and yellow.
But as annoying as gnats are when they congregate, they are better than other types of bugs for a couple of important reasons. Using fly sticky traps can prove to be effective by trapping the adult fungus gnats, “preventing them from laying eggs and breaking the lifecycle”, claimed the pros. Place a few pieces of overripe or rotting fruit in a large bowl, cover with plastic wrap and secure with a rubber band. The idea is that once gnats and fruit flies make their way in through the tiny holes, they get trapped within the plastic and can’t fly out. Fruit flies and gnats are also extremely attracted to rotten food – especially fruits and vegetables. In fact, it’s where fruit flies lay their eggs so the larva has something to eat once it hatches.
Prevention
Their thorax is tan, and their abdomens appear to have black and yellow stripes with a gray underbelly. Some other types of fruit flies appear to be solid gray or black. If you have interior house plants and think you have fungus gnats but aren't sure, yellow sticky traps can be placed in your plant pots near the base of the plant. This will help determine if there is any fungus gnat activity in the soil. Lucky for the gnats that want to move inside, many people have interior house plants, which provide fungus gnats with a year-round feeding and breeding source. Inside, keep an eye out for these pests flitting around light fixtures and windows. To pull it off, you’ll need apple cider vinegar, sugar, dish soap, water, and a container.
Kill off any larvae in the soil of your houseplants by digging down two to three inches and turning the top of the soil over. Allow the soil to dry out, which will kill the larvae in the soil.
